Should You Quit Caffeine for Anxiety DPDR Recovery?
Should you quit caffeine for DPDR recovery, or is that just another anxiety rule keeping you stuck? In this video, I talk about caffeine, anxiety, depersonalization, derealization, and why I don’t believe caffeine is the “end all be all” of recovery. For some people, caffeine genuinely can make anxiety symptoms, panic sensations, sleep, or nervous system arousal worse. If that’s you, cutting back or taking a break might make sense. But it’s not one size fits all. People are different biologically, mentally, emotionally, and lifestyle-wise. Some people are very sensitive to caffeine. Some people can drink coffee and barely notice anything. For me personally, quitting caffeine actually made me more scared and restricted, and I was able to drink it throughout my recovery. The bigger issue, in my opinion, is not always the caffeine itself. It’s the fear response to the sensations. If you avoid caffeine only because you’re terrified of feeling symptoms, that can turn into another form of avoidance behavior. And avoidance can keep teaching your brain that normal body sensations are dangerous. This doesn’t mean you need to force caffeine. It doesn’t mean caffeine is good or bad for everyone. It means recovery is about building freedom, flexibility, and trust in your body again, not living by fear-based rules. Everyone is different, so be honest with yourself. If caffeine destroys your sleep, constantly triggers panic, or feels genuinely unhelpful, adjust it. But if you’re only avoiding it because DPDR sensations scare you, that may be worth looking at differently.
