Dunsany's œuvre includes many hundreds of published short stories, plays, novels and essays ******************************* SUMMARY OF THE LESSON 1- This story is an embodiment of determination, commitment, devotion, and tolerance. 2- Once, there is a discussion on the need of opportunity and determination in life. 3- Jorkens is sure that ‘Determination’ is necessary for success in life but Terbut disagrees. 4- Jorkens proves his viewpoint by narrating the story of Gorgios who has the wild idea of becoming the Court Acrobat. 5- Gorgios goes into politics and starts preaching his ambition and its importance for the glory of his country. 6- It takes him more than 60 years to materialize his desire and then a great ceremony is arranged to crown his success. ************************ SHORT QUESTIONS ************************ Q i: what was the subject discussed at the club? The subject discussed at the club was of opportunity and determination. Some said opportunity was required for success in life while others went for determination. Jorkens said that a man could become a skating champion of the Sahara if he gave all his time to it. He would make money and build a skating rink there. Gorgios persuaded the people to make his country strong by creating a post of court acrobat. He said that a young athlete at Court, showing perfect physical fitness, would inspire the soldiers to win the just rights of the nation. In this way, the glory of their country and its ancient throne would be increased. Q v: What was the viewpoint of the parents of Gorgios? His parents were of the that both opportunity and determination were necessary to achieve success in life. Georgios learnt it all so late that his parents were right after all.
