🐶🖐️ A dog offering its paw can be an adorable gesture: a greeting, playtime, a learned command, or simply a way to get your attention. But if it happens suddenly, is repeated compulsively, or is accompanied by unusual signs, it might be asking for help. 📌 In this video, I'll show you when offering a paw is normal… and when it might be a sign of pain, anxiety, or even a neurological problem. Everything is explained clearly, as if your veterinarian were telling you. ✅ 1) When it's NORMAL The dog learned it as a trick and uses it to get a treat/attention. It does it when arriving home or during moments of positive excitement. It occurs in a clear context, and there are no other symptoms. ⚠️ 2) When it can be a WARNING SIGN 1) Pain in the paw or nails The most frequent “serious” cause is simple: it hurts. Broken nail, embedded grass seed, cracked paw pad, asphalt burn, wound between toes, fungal infection, or interdigital dermatitis. Slight limp or awkward gait. 👉 Hint: See if he licks that paw, hides it, or resists when you touch it. 2) Joint or bone pain Early onset of osteoarthritis, ligament injury, tendinitis, elbow/hip pain, growth spurt in young dogs. Sometimes he doesn't limp much, but insists on lifting/placing the paw as if seeking relief. 3) Intense itching (allergies and skin issues) Environmental or food allergies, fleas, mites, contact dermatitis. The dog may offer you his paw to scratch it or because he's uncomfortable. 4) Anxiety/Stress (Compulsive or Demanding Behavior) If your dog keeps pawing at you, flailing, or pushing you: This could be attention-seeking anxiety, frustration, stress, or a learned behavior that has been reinforced. It often appears with other signs: panting without feeling hot, restlessness, inability to relax, destructive behavior, and vocalization. 5) Digestive Problems or Nausea (Yes, this too) Some dogs, when upset, seek persistent contact and become clingy. If this coincides with gagging, drooling, grass-eating, loss of appetite… be careful. 6) Pain Elsewhere (Referred Pain) Some dogs “ask for help” with their paw even when the source of the pain is: ear (otitis), back, or abdomen. The pattern is: unusual behavior + general discomfort. 7) Neurological Problem (less frequent, but important) If, along with "giving their paw," you see: incoordination, tremors, a strange look in their eyes, abnormal pupils, falls, head tilt, seizures, weakness, sudden changes in behavior… 👉 this could indicate a neurological or toxic problem and requires urgent veterinary care. 🚨 3) Signs that you "need a vet today" Pronounced lameness, swollen or hot paw Deep wound, bleeding, or torn-off nail Doesn't put weight on the paw or cries when touched Fever, lethargy, repeated vomiting Neurological signs (incoordination, seizures, fainting) Suspected bite/poison ✅ 4) What you can do at home (first 5 minutes) Check between their toes and paw pads (grass, glass, ticks). Wash with saline solution/warm water if there is dirt and dry thoroughly. Prevent your dog from licking it (use an Elizabethan collar if necessary).
