This week I'm sharing this never-before-heard recording of my interview with Gavin Creel, as Broadway's lights dim to celebrate the life and career of one of its brightest stars, lost way too soon. Gavin was known for his immense talent but also his immense heart. Our conversation offers a precious glimpse into his heart and mind, where his passion, compassion, wisdom, humility, sense of humor, school spirit (go Blue!), and humanity are on full display. He shares insight into his journey to stardom, the challenges of the pandemic for a performer and for all of us, an invite to sit down with him and commiserate, the highlights of his live performance at Westport Country Playhouse for PBS's "Stars on Stage" series, how he and multi-Emmy-winning producer/director Andrew Wilk collaborated on the edit of the special, and why his medley "Another Hundred People"/"I Have Confidence"/"What Do I Need With Love" meant everything ("That's my proudest moment in the show because it encapsulates who I was, who I wanted to be, and who I became," he says). He wraps up the interview with a surprise call to my UMich musical theater son, Jamie Mann, just because Gavin loved to make anyone's day if he could.
