Higashi-Omi Giant Kite Festival, Japan 2013 東近江大凧まつり

Giant kite festival held on May 26, 2013 in Higashi-Omi, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Highlighted by a giant kite measuring 13 meters x 12 meters, exotic kites from all over Japan, a kite-flying contest, and more. Reported in English by three local kids and a few guests. Formerly called the Yokaichi Giant Kite Festival until 2011. Note: Due to the tragic giant kite crash in May 2015, this kite festival was suspended until 2025. In June 2025, the Higashi-Omi municipal government approved a subsidy of ¥1 million to build a giant kite for the Giant Kite Festival. The giant kite flying event was finally restarted on May 2, 2026. Spectators were kept far away from the kite which hardly flew in the air due to weak winds.
