In this episode: In recent weeks, Poland has decided to take a radical step – completely closing its border with Belarus. (INSERT) This event is not only symbolic, but above all, economic. It's a real blow for Minsk, as over 40% of Belarusian exports to the European Union passed through Poland. This hits the potash industry the hardest – Belarus is one of the largest exporters of potash fertilizers in the world, and land transport largely takes place via Polish railway tracks and crossings. Closing the borders means losses for Minsk amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars per month and the need to seek longer, less profitable routes through Lithuania and Latvia. (INSERT) And so, Backa miscalculated. Contrary to appearances, Russia is also affected by these actions, albeit in a slightly different way. Poland is one of the main transit corridors between East and West. Even before the war in Ukraine, approximately 60% of Russia's trade with the European Union passed through Polish border crossings – both road and rail. After the sanctions, this volume declined, but Poland still plays a key role in controlling freight and logistics traffic. Closing the borders poses an additional problem for Moscow, as it means greater reliance on alternative routes through the Baltic states, which are also hardening their policies towards Russia. Warsaw's decision has demonstrated that Poland has become a country whose decisions can realistically cripple the economies of its two neighbors. This is causing frustration in Minsk and Moscow, as it suddenly turns out that it's not the Kremlin or Lukashenka who are calling the shots on this part of the map, but Warsaw, which holds one of the most important geopolitical safety valves.
