Proper land selection, seed sowing, fertilizer management and maintenance are important for successful sweet pumpkin cultivation. Necessary conditions for sweet pumpkin cultivation. Land and soil preparation: High and medium loam or sandy-loam soil is suitable for sweet pumpkin cultivation. There should be a good drainage system. Before cultivating the land, the soil should be thoroughly cultivated 2-3 times and loosened with a ladder. 3-5 tons of rotted cow dung fertilizer should be applied to the land. Variety Selection: Different improved varieties of sweet pumpkin are available in Bangladesh, such as— Bari Sweet Pumpkin-1 Bari Sweet Pumpkin-2 Bari Sweet Pumpkin-3 Local varieties Seed sowing time: Rabi season: October-November Kharif season: February-March Seed rate and sowing method: 3-4 kg of seeds are required per hectare. Cultivation is done by pit method, it is better if the depth of each pit is 8-10 cm. 3-4 seeds should be given in each pit and after the seedlings grow, two healthy seedlings should be left and the rest should be removed. Row spacing should be kept at 2-3 meters and plant spacing should be kept at 1.5-2 meters. Fertilizer Management: Type and Amount of Fertilizer (per hundred): Cow dung 20-25 kg Urea 300 g TSP 250 g MOP 200 g The cow dung should be mixed with the soil. TSP and half of the MOP fertilizer should be applied during land preparation. Urea and the remaining MOP fertilizer should be applied in two installments when the seedlings grow. Care: After the seedlings grow, the excess seedlings should be removed. Weeds should be cleaned and the soil should be loosened. If necessary, a platform can be made so that the fruits do not fall on the ground. Moderate water irrigation should be given, especially in the dry season. Drainage should be arranged in case of excessive rain. Disease and insect control: Disease, Downy mildew: Yellow spots appear on the leaves, which later dry up. (Prevention: Ridomil Gold Spray) Powdery mildew: White fungus appears on the leaves. (Prevention: Sulfur powder spray) Viral diseases: Leaves curl, yield decreases. (Prevention: Uprooting affected plants) Insect attacks and remedies: Gourd beetle: Eats leaves. (Prevention: Diazinon spray) Fruit borer: Destroys fruit. (Prevention: Use bagging method) Fruit collection and yield: Sweet pumpkins are suitable for collection within 80-100 days of sowing.
