They Almost Tore Down This Entire Town for What’s Underneath It

In this documentary-style walk-through, we explore the unbelievable true history of Dunnellon, Florida — a forgotten boomtown built on the richest phosphate ever discovered on Earth. 🪨 In 1889, miners struck phosphate just down the road from where we’re standing. It triggered a Florida gold rush that changed the global farming industry — impacting crops across Europe. 🏗️ By 1890, workers were pouring in by the thousands. There were saloons, gambling dens, shootouts, and packed boarding houses. It was lawless, booming, and full of opportunity. 🚂 The entire town was platted before they even knew what they were standing on. Had they waited just 2 years, the layout — and history — of Dunnellon would’ve looked completely different. 🌲 Today, we walk through what’s left: • The original depot site and awkward street layout • The firehouse built by the CCC • The site of the old Dunnellon Hotel • The hardware store where court was held on Monday mornings • And the overgrown remains of the first phosphate mine itself 📍 Every inch of this town has a story — and if we don’t tell it now, we risk losing it forever. 👇 Comment your favorite story from the video, and don’t forget to subscribe for more forgotten Florida history. #Dunnellon #FloridaHistory #Boomtown #OldFlorida #HiddenHistory #PhosphateRush #HistoricWalkthrough #AbandonedPlaces #AmericanHistory #SmallTownUSA
