The Sahara was a grassland. Just 6,000 years ago, there were lakes and rivers flowing in that driest land on Earth. Elephants walked around, and crocodiles swam. Hippos were bathing in the water. A mural discovered in a cave near the Libyan border in 1933 depicted that very hippo. It is an animal that only someone who has seen it could draw.
