52-04 British Art 1900-50 - Realism in the 1920s and 30s
Following the First World War many artists rejected what they saw as the excesses of modernism and returned to traditional art forms. This was known as the 'Return to Order' and took place across Europe. In Britain, many artists sought new ways to express themselves based on traditional techniques. These artists are known as the British Realists and include such artists as Gerald Leslie Brockhurst, Meredith Frampton, Edward Burra, Colin Gill, Gluck, Laura Knight, Charles Spencelayh and Winifred Knights.
