Does Different Wood Matter? Hickory, Walnut, Mizunara & Maple Compared - JP Wiser's Wood Finish

Episode 832 How much impact can different woods have on the same whisky? Today I'm exploring four expressions from JP Wiser's Wood Series, all built on the same 13-year-old corn-and-rye whisky but finished with different wood inserts: • Hickory • Black Walnut • Japanese Oak (Mizunara) • Maple The base whisky remains recognizable throughout, but each wood takes it in a noticeably different direction. The bigger question is whether these inserts actually improve the whisky—or simply make it different. Can wood inserts compete with traditional cask maturation? Which wood works best? And why does one bottle suddenly jump to 45% ABV while the others sit at 40%? Let's find out.
