The South of Crete | Gortyna | Lentas

Exploring the wonders of the ancient capital of Crete, the point of lovemaking between Zeus and Europa that gave birth to Minos and his brothers. The oldest law scripture in Europe which was the base of Roman and Byzantine legal system and according to Greek tradition originate from the Minoans and their eponym King Minos. Then we move to the coast and the ancient port of Gortyna, Lentas known as Lebena in antiquity. Named after one of the two lionesses of the chariot of Goddes Rhea when she stopped in Crete to gave birth to baby Zeus. Lentas is situated in the Asterousia mountains in southern Crete, mountains named after Asterion the King of Crete before Minos. Lentas has one of the most renown sanctuaries of Asclepius, healing sanctuaries precursors of modern hospitals. Lentas is also known about the visit of the famous Philosopher and Healer Apollonius of Tyana which the pre-christian sources show as one of the person which synchretsed into the figure of Jesus Christ by the Christians.
