On 12 August 1964, an extraordinary incident unfolded at Meenambakkam airfield near Madras—an Indian Navy sailor took a Hawker Sea Hawk fighter aircraft into the sky without authorization. The man at the center of the story was Ajit Singh Gill, a young Naval Aircraft Ordnance Mechanic who had experience with aircraft systems and had previously obtained a private pilot licence. But flying a light civilian aircraft and controlling a powerful naval jet were very different things. According to later accounts of the incident, Gill took control of an Indian Navy Hawker Sea Hawk, associated with the Navy’s 300 Squadron, the “White Tigers.” Once airborne, an even bigger problem emerged: getting the aircraft safely back on the ground. Gill flew the Sea Hawk past INS Vikrant, India’s aircraft carrier, and eventually returned toward the airfield. Multiple attempts were reportedly made to bring the aircraft down, while naval personnel on the ground watched the extraordinary situation unfold. But the flight would not end with a conventional landing. Gill eventually ditched the Sea Hawk in the sea off the Madras coast near Thiruvanmiyur. He survived and was rescued by local fishermen.
