THIS IS IT!! The winner and reveal based on the shortlist of cars that I went to see recently. The budget was below RM4,000 for the next project car and based on the cars I went to see, and after weighing all the pros & cons, not to mention the eventual costs involved to restore, this amazing 1989 Toyota Corona 2.0 GLi won! Many of you called it actually, saying this was the best bet, congrats! Also factored in during the consideration phase, I felt it was somewhat poetic that I commemorate the year 2020 with a car named "Corona", since it will always remind me of what we ALL went thru in the 1st half of this year, and are still enduring and coming to terms with till today. We made the best of a bad time and we came out stronger. This car will be a celebration of that; we will continue to fight this, and we will win. As we become more and more used to the "new norm", let's take a moment to revel in this car that's 31-years old this year. Owned by an uncle who used it just to run around his neighbourhood, it was a buy & drive, in 100% original condition, down to the steel wheels and rim covers, zero mods insofar as the powertrain is concerned, which is what I love. Designated ST171, it's powered by a 3S-FE 2.0-litre, 4-cyl, twin-cam, fuel-injected, 16-valve engine. Power goes to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual gearbox. Max Power is rated at a respectable 126bhp at 5,600rpm and 179Nm of torque at 4,400rpm. BTW, these were absolute ground-breaking performance figures in the 80s, lol! I found the car on FB Marketplace and it was listed as being for sale in "Gali, Pahang". I called, all prepared to head for Gali to view it, but it turned out the car was in Puchong! So a 3hr journey one-way to Gali, suddenly turned into a 30min short-hop to Puchong. One test drive and a little bit of haggling much later, the car was mine for RM3.5k including inspection & transfer. Since I've owned a Corona in the past, an earlier TT132 model, I'm really looking forward to owning its successor! Also, back in the 80s, this car was pegged as an upgrade from the Corolla, and seeing as how I've owned that too - both a KE30 and Rockin' Rolla AE92 SE - you could say I've upgraded as well, haha! So, say hello to my Rockin' Rona folks.
