"Te Whare Tīwekaweka" with Marlon Williams and KOMMI | In The Pits Episode 2

This week, the Pit Crew are down in Ōhinehou-Lyttelton speaking with golden-voiced Marlon Williams (Kāi Tahu, Ngāi Tai) and WitchHop world-builder KOMMI (Kāi Tahu, Te-Āti-Awa) about Williams’ forthcoming te reo Māori album Te Whare Tīwekaweka (releasing April 4th). Filmed in his lounge, Marlon discusses the deeply personal process of making this record over five years, and enlisting the help of his friend KOMMI to get his reo up to scratch for the project. The pair reflect on the playful quality of their friendship, and how this shaped the collaborative process- plus ideas of how language informs expression, and what it was like letting director Ursula Grace Williams film the making of the album for the upcoming documentary Marlon Williams: Ngā Ao E Rua - Two Worlds (in cinemas May 1st). In The Pits is the collaborative endeavour of Rachel Ashby, Annabel Kean, Zoë Larsen Cumming, and Callum Devlin. It is a podcast born out of a shared love of the independent and underground music scenes of Aotearoa. This podcast was recorded 28.02.24 Hosted by Rachel Ashby Edited by Callum Devlin & Zoë Larsen Cumming Produced by Zoë Larsen Cumming Filmed by Finn Johansson & Callum Devlin Intro + outro music "Gap Selection" by Amamelia from the album Bananamelia (available on Sunreturn Records).
