It's a quick and efficient way to store a good number of photos. You can even imagine widening the spine and adding more pages: 6 cm spine: 5 pages 8 cm spine: 7 pages 10 cm spine: 9 pages (All spaced 1 cm apart, as in the tutorial) By adding flaps, you can increase the photo capacity.
