A day in the life of a street reclaimer

Waste reclaimers play a critical role in South Africa's recycling economy, ensuring that larges volumes of valuable materials remain in our economy, and out of landfills and the environment. They work in incredibly challenging conditions, often as the sole breadwinners for their families. The African Reclaimers Organisation, a supporting member of the South African Plastics Pact, is working to support reclaimers, ensuring they are more formally recognised, compensated and protected as they conduct their work. South African Plastics Pact members are making use of on-pack recycling labels (OPRLs), specifically designed for consumers. These OPRLs are a standardised and accurate reflection of a particular piece of packaging's recyclability within the South African context. They make it clear as to hich of the different packaging components are recyclable. Citizens are encouraged to read these labels when purchasing items, so that one can make an informed design about the impact of one's consumer choices. Citizens can support reclaimers as well. By separating your recyclables into clear bags, you can help reclaimers access the materials they are collecting more easily, and in so doing, you can play your part in creating a circular economy in South Africa.
