Adyashanti describes here the adventure of consciousness and why it has come to deceive itself through ignorance. This is chapter 9 of his book, Pure Consciousness. Adyashanti (whose name means primordial peace) challenges all aspirants to peace and freedom to seriously consider the possibility of liberation in this lifetime. He began teaching in 1996 at the request of his Zen master, with whom he had studied for fourteen years. Since then, many spiritual seekers have awakened to their essential nature through their interactions with Adyashanti. Author of Emptiness Dancing, The Impact of Awakening, and My Secret is Silence, Adyashanti offers spontaneous and direct instruction similar to the teachings of the early Zen masters and the sages of Advaita Vedanta. Nevertheless, Adyashanti states, “If you filter my words through a tradition or a system ending in -ism, you miss what I’m saying. Liberating truth is not static; it is alive. It cannot be expressed as concepts and cannot be grasped by the mind. Truth resides beyond all forms of conceptual fundamentalism. What you are lies beyond—awake and present, already here and now. I am simply helping you realize this.” A native of Northern California, Adyashanti lives with his wife, Annie, and teaches primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area, offering satsangs, intensive weekends, and silent retreats.
