Kanazawa Buddhist altars are a majestic and magnificent sight, crafted with refined and uniquely beautiful wood carvings, sophisticated maki-e techniques, and gorgeous gold leaf. Kanazawa Buddhist altars are a beautiful fusion of the technical expertise developed at the Kaga domain's workshops and the colorful culture born from the wealth of the Kaga domain's one million koku domain. They are so dazzling that they were designated a traditional craft in 1976. However, in recent years, demand for traditional large Buddhist altars has decreased due to changes in housing conditions and lifestyles. Young Kanazawa Buddhist altar artisans are experimenting with new forms of altars and accessories while still utilizing traditional techniques. They are also exploring new sales channels, targeting foreigners interested in Japanese culture. One such artist is Seiji Oka, the 18th generation lacquerer at Nurishioka Buddhist Altar Shop, which was founded 205 years ago.
