Mon Laferte Revela la Verdad Oculta y Rompe el Silencio Tras Años de Dolor

Mon Laferte Reveals the Hidden Truth and Breaks Her Silence After Years of Pain Mon Laferte is today one of the most powerful and respected voices in Latin music, but her journey began far from the massive stages. For years, before the world knew her as Mon Laferte, Monserrat Bustamante sang in the streets and small bars of Viña del Mar, dreaming that a television producer would notice her. When she finally landed on TVN's Rojo, she discovered that this platform wouldn't lead her to become the free artist she longed for, but rather a figure molded to fit foreign stereotypes. They dressed her like a Shakira impersonator, touted her as the new Thalía, and pushed her to follow a prefabricated mold that had nothing to do with her essence. Over time, she understood that, in Chile, they were transforming her into something she despised: a disposable artist, without her own voice and trapped in an image that wasn't hers. Even with a gold record and a degree of recognition, she made the most difficult decision of her life: to abandon what little security she had and emigrate to Mexico, a country where no one knew her and where she would have to start from scratch. She knew that as long as she remained "the Monserrat from Rojo," she would never have the credibility or artistic freedom she sought, so she chose the riskiest path, but also the only one that would allow her to reinvent herself and become the authentic artist she always wanted to be. In Chile, Mon Laferte carried the pressure of always performing the same popular songs, like "Corazón Bandido," a song she ended up hating because of what it represented for her. Meanwhile, Roberto Lea, her partner at the time, had traveled to Mexico City earlier in April 2007 and found a small apartment in the Zona Rosa, warning Montserrat that in that country, just as in Chile, artists from television were seen as disposable. That judgment hurt her deeply because she felt she had become just that: an empty version of herself, “the girl from TV,” and that she had betrayed her own ideals by following a path that wasn't hers to follow. Emotionally drained and exhausted from feeling like a manufactured figure, she decided to give it all up and start over, as she recounted years later in an interview. However, once settled in Mexico and while immersing herself in her musical training, her body began to show worrying signs: constant throat pain and abrupt changes in her voice. She sought medical attention thinking it was something minor and ended up facing one of the most devastating pieces of news of her life, an illness that threatened not only her career but her very identity as an artist. At 25, Monserrat received one of the hardest blows of her life: she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, devastating news for someone who was just beginning to make her way and who never imagined facing something like that so young. It was in July that she finally traveled to Mexico, determined to be reborn as Mon Laferte and not as the television personality she had been in Chile. After overcoming her illness, she began a new creative phase and in 2011 recorded her first album in Mexico, Desechable, a work marked by her inner struggle and her search for identity. Then came Tornasol, where her artistic vision began to take shape, until in 2015 she achieved massive recognition with Mon Laferte Vol. 1, which solidified her as a genuine force in Latin music. In 2017, she released La Trenza, an album that catapulted her even further and showcased her musical maturity. Despite her television background, her team in Chile and Mexico avoids discussing her past on Rojo, as they believe it doesn't contribute to the image she has cultivated. However, when the press in Viña del Mar tried to find out why she never mentions that period, Mon Laferte responded in the most honest way possible: by singing one of her new songs a cappella, making it clear that today her voice speaks louder than any memory of the past.
