"As of 12:01 a.m. on March 28, it is no longer possible to apply for Italian citizenship based on the old rules," the minister stated. He emphasized that only applications filed by midnight yesterday will continue to be evaluated under the previous legislation. All others will be analyzed under the new criteria, considered more rigorous and restrictive. The minister strongly criticized the instrumental use of Italian citizenship to obtain European passports. According to him, many applicants demonstrate little or no connection to Italy and seek recognition merely as a shortcut to travel, work, or reside in other European Union countries. "Being an Italian citizen cannot be reduced to having a passport in your pocket to shop in Miami," said Tajani. He also pointed out that there are people who have never set foot in Italy but receive consular support and even medical services paid for by the state, without contributing taxes—which, according to him, represents an unacceptable burden on the Italian public coffers.
