Twin test: Mercedes A250e vs Audi A3

It's the battle of the plug-in hybrids as Audi A3 TFSIe takes on Mercedes A250e. In the inevitable switchover from fossil fuels to electric power, plug-in hybrids have been seen as a good halfway house. Provided they're kept charged up, they behave just like an electric car for the first few miles, but then have a combustion engine on hand in case you need to go further. They also have the potential to save you heaps in terms of fuel and various taxes. In this CarGurus UK video review, Vicky Parrott tests out two of the best options if you're looking for a compact PHEV with a premium edge, the Audi A3 Sportback TFSIe and the Mercedes-Benz A250e. There's very little between them in terms of the numbers: both have around 200bhp, an electric-only range of around 40 miles, an official mpg of well over 200mpg (however unlikely that is in the real world!), and there's only a handful of pounds between them on price.
