A year later, armed with accumulated experience in strong currents, I returned to the Nicaragua Whirlpool. The first cast was a hit, instantly raising my expectations. I started fishing at 6 PM, and the first hour went smoothly—I don't know why, but I wasn't getting snagged much. For the next two hours, I spent most of the time tying up my line, getting snagged every time I cast. Throughout the evening, I felt there were fish, but it wasn't a particularly hot season; only a few small-mouthed fish were biting around me.
