In this video, I discuss Russian author Aleksandr Pushkin's Yevgeni Onegin. Along with Balzac's Modeste Mignon, Yevgeni Onegin was one of the two works found in the bag of our esteemed author Sabahattin Ali when he was murdered. This novel, one of the forerunners of anti-heroic characters, was first written in 1833. A key work of the verse-novel genre, it is also one of the pioneering works of the Realism movement. The duel scene between Onegin and Lensky in the novel, unfortunately, reflected reality in Pushkin's own life and led to his death. The author, who initially starts Tanya (Tatyana) as a weak character and then elevates her to a strong one, ultimately transforms the anti-hero Onegin into a weak one. While the novel's subject matter may seem ordinary by today's standards, its anti-heroic figure, a strong, rebellious female figure by the time, and a novel written in verse form, Yevgeni Onegin is one of the most important works in literary history. There are three translations in our language, including the translation by Azer Yaran in the Kazım Taşkent Series of Yapı Kredi Publications, the translation by Kanşaubiy Miziev - Ahmet Necdet in Ayrıntı Publications, and the translation by Sabri Gürses in Alfa Publications.
