Niko Bellic was born somewhere in the former Yugoslavia around 1978 — a land torn apart by war, betrayal, and poverty. His father was a violent drunk. His mother, Milica Bellic, spent her days wishing her son could escape that broken place. He grew up alongside his brother and his cousin Roman Bellic, and for a while, life still had a bit of hope — friends, laughter, even a crush on Mila Tadic. But then came the Yugoslav Wars (1991–2001), and everything changed. Niko became a teenage soldier, fighting through the ruins of Serbia, Bosnia, and Croatia — watching his brother die and losing every friend he’d ever known. Among his unit were Florian Cravic and Darko Brevic, one of whom would betray them all. After the war, Niko drifted through Eastern Europe, trapped in the criminal underworld — smuggling, killing, surviving. He worked for Ray Bulgarin, a ruthless trafficker who later accused Niko of stealing his money during a failed job near Italy. Hunted and desperate, Niko finally fled to Liberty City, chasing Roman’s promises of “the American Dream.” But Liberty City wasn’t the dream he imagined — it was just another battlefield. The Albanian loan sharks, Vlad Glebov, Bulgarin, and the ghosts of his past would all come back to haunt him.
