Joint hypermobility is when you can move your joints more than most people. This condition can bring benefits to dancers and gymnasts, but some people may experience pain, fatigue, tissue fragility, and other associated symptoms. In these cases, Joint Hypermobility Syndrome, a more serious stage, is diagnosed. You probably noticed this characteristic since childhood, when you could move your joints more than others. Hypermobility, in itself, is not a disease, and most people do not have symptoms. It can even be an advantage for dancers, musicians, and athletes. However, some people with joint hypermobility may have muscle pain, or a predisposition to dislocations (moving the joint out of place), tendonitis, bursitis, etc. If you have these symptoms, you may have Joint Hypermobility Syndrome. Although joint hypermobility is not a disease, people with this condition are more likely to have joint pain, including during daily activities. Hypermobility is not something that can be changed or cured; it is the way the body was designed. However, if it causes symptoms, they can be controlled with physical therapy and by changing the pace of your activities. If necessary, medication may be used. Remember that it is very common to have joint hypermobility and most people will not have any other problems. However, some people will have symptoms that affect their daily activities.
