The terminal stage of cancer is a time when aggressive cancer treatment is unlikely to be effective. As many painful cancer symptoms emerge, this is also a time when palliative care is focused on alleviating that pain. At this stage, many patients suffer from ascites, a condition known as fluid buildup in the abdomen. When I worked at a hospice, many patients were admitted because of abdominal bloating and discomfort caused by ascites; ascites is a very painful symptom. Seeing such a patient's condition, families may want to do something to help, but may feel distressed because they don't know what to do. Ascites at this stage is actually difficult to cure, and even if it is drained, it will quickly re-accumulate. Therefore, medical professionals vary in their approach to whether or not to drain it. So, how should we think about ascites in the terminal stage of cancer, and how can we make patients feel better?
