It is the site of the Nirvana of Great Master Wonhyo. The rock-carved seated Buddha at the very top of Golgulam is designated as Treasure No. 581. It is said that in the past, it was famous as a Dharma hall that served as a place of treatment for the sick. However, it was destroyed by a major forest fire during the mid-Joseon Dynasty and was rebuilt in 1985 by Venerable Seol Jeok-un, at which time Seonmudo was also disseminated. Seonmudo is a traditional martial art of the Hwarang and monk soldiers, and it is a practical training method involving breathing and martial arts. Although it seemed its lineage was severed during the late Joseon Dynasty and the Japanese colonial period, Seonmudo was revived and developed again by Venerable Seol Jeok-un. Currently, through the operation of Seonmudo College at Golgulsan Temple, the discipline is being widely known around the world by training leaders and promoting the practice.
