Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello - Ouverture-Suite in C for Strings & Continuo: Hornpipe

Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello was almost the only Italian Baroque Composer to have written large scale Chaconnes and Ouverture-Suites. La Serenissima's most recent single release, Brescianello's Ouverture-Suite in C for Strings & Continuo is a shining example of an Italian baroque large scale Ouverture-Suite. Even rarer than the suite itself is the presence of an English Hornpipe within this set of works. The English Hornpipe was a dance rarely used by Italian baroque composers in their music. As the name suggests it was a dance more commonly seen in English music of the time. Brescianello worked for most of his career at the court of Württemberg in Stuttgart. This court had strong links with the imperial court, where Nicola Matteis the Younger was leader of the court orchestra. As such it is reasonable to suggest that the Nicola Matteis the Younger may have been an influence in Brescianello's life, which possibly would have given rise to the presence of the English Hornpipe in his works.
