Emile Griffith defended his World Welterweight Championship against Benny "Kid" Paret in their third and final bout on March 24, 1962, at Madison Square Garden, New York City. The fight was nationally televised and highly anticipated, following a bitter rivalry between the two men. The Weigh-In SlurAt the weigh-in for their March 24, 1962, rubber match at Madison Square Garden, the reigning welterweight champion Benny Paret taunted his challenger, Emile Griffith. Paret called Griffith a "maricón"—a derogatory Cuban slang term roughly translated to "faggot". The slur was highly personal for Griffith, who hid his bisexuality in an era when it was severely stigmatized and even illegal. Paret knew Griffith was sensitive about rumors regarding his sexuality and used the insult to deliberately enrage and unsettle him before the bout. Griffith was restrained by his manager, Gil Clancy, but vowed revenge.The Fatal FightDuring their 12th-round championship bout, Griffith trapped Paret in the corner and unleashed a devastating, merciless barrage of 17 unanswered punches in just seven seconds. The referee failed to stop the fight in time. Paret fell into a coma and died 10 days later. In Round 12, Griffith unleashed a prolonged combination while Paret was trapped against the ropes, causing a devastating knockout. Paret collapsed in the ring and never regained consciousness. He died ten days later from brain injuries sustained in the fight. This event became one of the most tragic moments in boxing history and led to widespread debate about safety in the sport and the role of television in combat sports.
