Why do we remain unsatisfied even after hearing an explanation? In a 1983 BBC interview, Richard Feynman was asked a very famous question: “Why do magnets repel each other?” Most people want to hear an answer to this question in the form of familiar analogies or simple stories. However, Feynman took a more honest approach. Physics often answers the question of “how” rather than “why.” The reason magnets repel each other and the reason your hand cannot pass through a desk are fundamentally connected to the same physical phenomenon. It is the electromagnetic force. There is only one difference: We are accustomed to the sensation of touching a desk, but we are not accustomed to the phenomenon of magnets repelling each other. In other words, the mystery exists not only within physics but also within our psychology.
