C5 Corvette Coolant/Antifreeze Change
C5 Corvette years 1997 thru 2004 Supplies needed: For each Corvette 3 Gallons of GM Dexcool 50/50 premix 10-5027 part #12378390 – MSRP $17.98 + sales tax per gallon. Tools I used: 2 ramps and lots of spare wood 2 jack stands Floor jack 1/4 inch ratchet with 3-inch extension. Funnel 12-quart bucket Rubber gloves Towel for fender coverage GM recommends draining and refilling with Dexcool coolant/anti-freeze every 150,000 miles, or 5-years, which ever comes first. To summarize what worked best for me today: 1. Get car up off ground, but level. 2. Start engine and turn heater to full hot setting. 3. Run engine until DIC shows at least 210F (I prefer 221F). 4. Turn off engine. 5. Put on rubber gloves to protect from coolant splash burns. 6. Put 12 quart bucket under radiator. 7. Use 1/4 inch ratchet, with 3-inch extension, to unscrew drain cock a quarter turn counter-clockwise to open. 8. After 1 gallon of HOT coolant drains out under pressure, NOW open the surge tank cap SLOWLY and remove cap. 9. Wait for second gallon of coolant to drain out until you have at least 8 quarts in bucket. 10. Close drain cock by turning 1/4 turn clockwise. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11. Fill coolant surge tank until 1/2 inch above cold mark. 12. Start and run engine for only 1 minute with surge tank cap still removed. 13. With engine running, check coolant level in surge tank to ensure it is still 1/2 inch above cold full mark. 14. With engine running, screw cap on surge tank tight. 15. Continue running engine until it reaches 210F. 16. Turn off engine and SLOWLY unscrew surge tank cap to release trapped air. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 17. Start engine and idle 1 minute while cap is still off. 18. With engine running, top off surge tank with coolant until it is 1/2 inch above cold full mark. 19. With engine running, put surge tank cap on tight. 20. Continue running engine until it reaches 210F again. 21. Check if coolant is 1/2 above full cold mark, top off if needed. 22. Ensure cap is screwed tight. 23. Turn off engine. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 24. Lower jack to put back wheels down so engine is higher than rear of car. 25. Run engine until it reaches 210F one last time to ensure that no air is trapped in cooling system.
