India has launched one of its most ambitious initiatives to tackle the long-standing challenge of stubble burning. In a high-level meeting chaired by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, the Government of India reviewed the progress of the Crop Residue Management (CRM) Scheme and announced a comprehensive strategy for the 2026-27 season. Under the new plan, the government has allocated ₹544.15 crore for stubble management, with a target of distributing more than 46,000 crop residue management machines, establishing 910 Custom Hiring Centres, and developing 141 stubble supply chain projects. The meeting also reviewed preparations for managing an estimated 27.62 million tonnes (2.762 crore tonnes) of paddy stubble during the upcoming harvesting season. The vision is clear: transform stubble from an environmental problem into an economic resource while improving soil fertility, protecting the environment, increasing farmer income, and promoting sustainable agriculture.
