Father Pierluigi Banna introduced the topic by asking how the charismatic gifts of the new ecclesial groups are coessential to the hierarchical gifts and what features distinguish them from other phenomena in the history of the Church. He recalled Iuvenescit Ecclesia and the teachings of Saint John Paul II, Benedict XVI, Francis, and Leo XIV, emphasizing that institution and charisms must be interpreted within the one grace. Cardinal Marc Ouellet traced the origin of charisms to the mission of the Holy Spirit in the Church. The Spirit works in the sacramental and charismatic dimensions, marked by freedom, generosity, and creativity. For Ouellet, the charisms of the movements have a global and communional nature: they make the Church visible as a prophetic and missionary communion, often born from a shared foundational charism. Professor Ilaria Vigorelli translated the reflection into experiential terms: coessentiality is rooted in the baptismal vocation. The laity participate in Christ's prophetic mission in daily, family, and social life, making grace present in the ordinary contexts of existence. Msgr. Piero Coda emphasized that Vatican II took a decisive step in recognizing the relationship between hierarchical and charismatic gifts. The new ecclesial realities constitute a kairos: they embody the conciliar vision of the Church as the people of God, a communion of vocations, states of life, charisms, and mission-oriented ministries. Fr. Alberto Cozzi emphasized the ability of charisms to make the beauty of the Gospel perceptible in a fragmented society. They bridge the gap between ecclesial language and concrete life, allowing believers to reclaim their faith in a way that is appropriate for the times. Father Ezio Prato recalled texts by Father Luigi Giussani, highlighting three aspects: the existential nature of charisma, which makes Christianity more persuasive; its decisiveness, because through it Christ reaches humanity today; and its totality, because it offers a perspective on the whole of Christianity. In the second part, Father Pierluigi Banna addressed the issue of the institutionalization of charisms. Ouellet stated that this must preserve continuity and coherence without stifling the newness of the Spirit. Vigorelli identified adoration, dialogue, and vitality as the criteria for discernment. Coda linked the maturation of charisms to the synodal process, as a new reception of Vatican II. Cozzi described institutionalization as the definition of belonging, roles, and public recognition. Prato recalled that true charisma accepts the cross of obedience in the Church. In conclusion, the meeting demonstrated that charisms are not marginal realities, but rather ways through which the Spirit renews the ecclesial mission. Their origin is grace, their verification is Christ, and their maturation requires time, discernment, communion, and synodal openness. #Charisms #CatholicChurch #IuvenescitEcclesia #EcclesialMovements #Synodality #GospelToday
