Amazing Ledger Stones and monument at Bramfield, and original rood screen.

As Paul would say this is a gem of a church, distinctive with its detached round tower, a rare thing in Suffolk. The gems of this church also lay inside with its 15th or early 16th century gilded gesso decorated rood screen with decorated tracery. The five panels depict Saints Mark, Matthew, Lake, John and Mary Magdalen. This alone is truly worth seeing, but this church just keeps on giving. When you pass through the Rood Screen, you come across many Ledger Stones in the floor of the chancel for the Rabett and Nelson families. But it's the one for Bridget Applewhaite that is truly memorable as it tells the sad tale of her. The author of the guidebook believes that she may have been a difficult and unattractive woman, this may have been the reason why she didn't marry until she was 35. Perhaps she was just choosy. She was an heiress and her father in law thought she would be a good catch for his son. Its clear she struggled in life and suffered in death. The ecclesiastical society thought this was so very revolting and profane that it would print it. it wasn't until 1882 whe a woman's property was separated from her husband. The extraordinary tomb is for Arthur and his wife Elizabeth Coke, who unfortunately died in childbirth. This tomb was carved by Nicholas Stone who carried out work in Westminster Abbey. One vicar, Bartholomew Allerton, sailed with his father on the Mayflower in 1620. He must have made the return journey as he took up a position as vicar here when many vicars were losing their living in the 1640s.
