Community Seed Banks in the Sowing Diversity=Harvesting Security (SD=HS) Program
In Uganda, it is estimated that the majority of small-scale farmers have no access to good quality seed hence end up using the poor quality that is readily available to them. Through the Sowing diversity equals Harvesting Security, ESAFF Uganda has supported the construction and equipping of 4 community seed banks in the districts of Omoro, Amuria, Apac and Adjumani. These CSBS are designed to conserve, restore, revitalize, strengthen and improve access to Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (PGRFA) hence improving access to a variety of Plant genetic Resources (PGR) as well as indigenous knowledge on the management of locally produced varieties. These are locally managed by small-scale farmers who ensure that communities are able to access good quality seed throughout the year. In this video, ESAFF Uganda interviewed some of the Community Seed Bank leaders and beneficiaries to assess the effectiveness of the CSBs in the communities.
