Metering Modes and Exposure Compensation - Metering in Practice In this video, you will learn in a practical and easy way how camera metering modes work. We will also teach you how to compensate for exposure to always obtain perfect metering. Metering modes can be classified as: Matrix metering: measures the entire frame of the scene. It is the most commonly used metering mode in all cameras. Spot metering: this metering mode evaluates the scene at only one point in the center of the frame, equivalent to 5% of the total image. Recommended for high-contrast scenes, where you want to meter at a specific point in your scene. Center-weighted metering: this mode works similarly to matrix metering, but gives more weight to what is in the center of the scene compared to the edges. Partial metering: exclusive to Canon cameras, this mode works similarly to spot metering, but considers a larger area, approximately 15% of the scene. This video also discusses exposure compensation. Situations where white or black predominates, where the photographer needs to underexpose or overexpose the scene by one or more stops on the light meter to obtain the correct metering.
