Derinkuyu Underground City is an ancient underground city in Turkey that could shelter up to 20,000 people and their animals and food supplies. It is the largest excavated underground city in the world and one of the many underground complexes in the region of Cappadocia. It has 18 levels that go as deep as 85 meters (279 feet) below the surface, and it has various features such as ventilation shafts, rolling stone doors, wine and oil presses, stables, cellars, storage rooms, refectories, chapels, and a cruciform church. It was built by different civilizations over thousands of years, starting from the Phrygians in the 8th-7th centuries BCE¹, and was used as a refuge from wars, invasions, and persecutions. It was connected to other underground cities by tunnels that spanned for hundreds of miles.
