In this discourse, Siddhaguru Sri Ramananda Maharshi explains the divine glory of the 32nd Shivalingam of Mahakalavana — Pattaneswara Shivalingam. Lord Shiva tells Goddess Parvati that this Shivalingam is known as Pattaneswara, a sacred Linga that grants Siddhi to devotees. Even the darshan of this Shivalingam is described as spiritually powerful. In the sacred narration, Goddess Parvati asks Lord Shiva why He left the beautiful and divine Kailasa — a place filled with Siddhas, Charanas, Gandharvas, Kinnaras, purity, music, and divine joy — and chose to reside in Mahakalavana. Lord Shiva then reveals the hidden glory of Mahakalavana. Though it may appear like a forest, it is greater than heaven in spiritual joy. It is a sacred place where Rishis, Siddhas, Yogis, tapasvis, and divine beings dwell in peace, meditation, and worship. Siddhaguru explains that when daily worship, abhishekam, Rudra chanting, dhupa, deepa, and naivedya are performed in a temple, the divine energy of that place increases. The idol or Shivalingam begins to radiate spiritual life and divine presence. Narada Maharshi describes Pattaneswara Shivalingam as a mysterious and radiant form of Shiva. At times it appears red, at times yellow, and at times dark. Sometimes it shines like a thousand suns, sometimes like one sun, and sometimes with a brilliance greater than the moon. Lord Shiva declares that when Pattaneswara Mahadeva becomes pleased, birth, death, old age, disease, fear, sorrow, and suffering are destroyed. Shivalinga Story Once, while Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were on the beautiful Mandara Mountain, Parvati Devi asked a deep question. She said, “O Lord, Kailasa is pure like pearls, radiant like the moon, filled with Siddhas, Charanas, Gandharvas, Kinnaras, divine music, flowers, sacred birds, and heavenly beauty. Why do You leave such a divine Kailasa and reside in Mahakalavana, a forest filled with animals, trees, creepers, and wilderness?” Lord Shiva, pleased by Parvati’s question, revealed the greatness of Mahakalavana. He explained that Mahakalavana is not an ordinary forest. It is more joyful than heaven, filled with the power of tapas, worship, and divine beings. In that sacred Mahakalavana shines the 32nd Shivalingam — Pattaneswara Shivalingam. It grants Siddhi, removes sins, and destroys the suffering caused by birth, death, old age, disease, and sorrow. Narada Maharshi further describes this Shivalingam as a divine form that shines in many ways — sometimes like a thousand suns, sometimes like the moon, sometimes visible, sometimes invisible, sometimes with a name, and sometimes beyond all names.
