Nigeria: A Land Where Honesty Leads Nowhere; Corruption Leads Everywhere

In Nigeria, Clinging to Honesty Feels Like Digging Your Own Grave In a land where theft, corruption, dishonesty, and arrogance prevail, one man stands out by leaving behind $200 million—an amount he could have easily taken without facing any consequences. What does this tell us about him? In this same environment of moral decay, that same man turns down a lifetime pension that was part of his benefits package because of the deal's unethical nature. How many people would do that? Mr Peter Obi is the only Nigerian politician who saved money for the state and left it for the next elected governor to use for the benefit of the people. While this may seem typical in other parts of the world, it is unprecedented in Nigeria. Despite this, Nigerians continue to elect leaders who are emblematic of the very issues discussed. Three years after the last election, the situation in Nigeria has worsened, yet the same individuals who contribute to this decline remain in power. Why is this? George Carlin's statement has never rung truer: "Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups." Nearly every institution, whether public or private, and most Nigerians indulge in corruption, even when they strive to resist it; the system compels compliance.
