The unusual features of the statues raise many questions. First of all, why are the Buddha's ears so long? Why is his hair styled so strangely? Why are some Buddha statues depicted as so chubby? And do all these things have anything to do with the Buddha’s true appearance? In this video, we will mostly look at what the Buddha actually looked like and explain how that relates to modern statues. Statues often represent not physical reality, but a state of enlightened mind: peace, compassion, and wisdom. That’s why the proportions and facial expressions are stylized and idealized. Buddhist statues are made in different countries—India, China, Japan, Thailand, Tibet, and so on—and the style depends on the local culture. But first, let’s find out what the Buddha really looked like. Bodily Characteristics of the Buddha The spiritual teacher Buddha is depicted in Buddhist art—sculptures and bas-reliefs. His image was formed based on ancient sources, in particular the “32 Major Marks of a Great Man,” described in the Pali Canon. These marks became the foundation for the depiction of the Buddha. The 32 major signs are further supplemented by 80 secondary minor characteristics.
