Patrick Stewart Learns More About His Father's Role In The Army - Who Do You Think You Are?

Patrick discusses how his brother was born out of wedlock and discovers what he had suspected, that his Father left for the army just two weeks after the birth of Patrick's older brother, perhaps to escape the responsibilities at home. He also learns more about his Fathers role in the army and what it required. In 2007, Sir Patrick Stewart played Macbeth in the West End. Dressed in military fatigues and carrying an AK47, he stared in the mirror and came face to face with the past. "I realised that looking right back at me was my father and it was shocking." He realised he'd been channelling his father for years. It was a profound revelation not just because the actor's father was a military man, but because Alfred Stewart was violent towards Patrick's mother, Gladys. "Sometimes we had to call an ambulance," says Patrick of his Yorkshire childhood. Yet Alfred was also a "good raconteur" who told spellbinding "adventure stories" of his Second World War service.
