The phrase “iron sharpens iron” is found in Proverbs 27:17: “Iron sharpens iron, and a man sharpens the countenance of his neighbor.” The friction of two knives sharpens each other, making their edges sharper, making them more effective in performing their function. In the same way, the Word of God is sharper than a two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12), and it is with its help that we are to “sharpen” each other – in communication and in any other interaction with other people. This text points to the need for communication with each other. Man was not created to be alone, because this is not what the Lord God declared even before the fall (Genesis 2:18).
