Why is there a moment during a climb, a set, or a time trial when your breathing suddenly becomes rapid and seems impossible to control? The usual explanation is that there's a lack of oxygen or that lactate is acidifying the muscles. However, the actual physiology is different. In this video, I explain why we start to hyperventilate when we approach or exceed an intensity close to LT2, what the relationship is between lactate, proton production, bicarbonate, and carbon dioxide, and how the body uses breathing to maintain acid-base balance. We'll analyze: — Why lactate isn't directly responsible for acidosis. — How bicarbonate buffering works. — What the isocapnic buffering phase is. — Why CO₂ production increases during intense exercise. — What happens at the point of respiratory compensation. — Why the respiratory rate increases. — How to recognize VT2 and the respiratory compensation point in an exercise test. — What are the differences between LT2, VT2, and the respiratory compensation point. — How to use breathing to regulate intensity during training. We will also see how the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation helps explain why CO₂ elimination partially compensates for the drop in pH. Hyperventilation is not necessarily a sign of lung failure. It is a physiological response by which the body attempts to maintain internal balance as intensity continues to increase. Understanding this mechanism allows for a better interpretation of sensations during exertion, correct use of the talking test, and avoiding errors when establishing training zones.
