Service Unites 2018: Amal Kassir, Spoken Word Poem "At The Table"
Amal Kassir is a Muslim woman, born and raised in Denver, Colorado, to a German-Iowan mother and a Syrian father. She is an international spoken word poet, having performed in 10 countries and more than 45 cities. She has conducted workshops, given lectures, and recited her poetry in venues ranging from youth prisons, to orphanages and refugee camps, from universities to churches and community spaces for the public. Amal performed her poem, "At The Table" during the Opening Plenary at Service Unites. Service Unites, powered by Points of Light, is the largest service-related convening of nonprofit, government, business and civic leaders, bringing together thousands each year from around the globe to collaborate and ensure the volunteer sector continues to grow and innovate in this rapidly changing world. In 2018, attendees were challenged to be a spark that ignites civic culture — a culture in which living a civic life is the norm, not the exception; a culture in which every person is inspired, equipped and mobilized to be a citizen in the fullest sense, to take action that changes the world.
