Totentanz “parafrasis de Dies Irae” es una pieza para piano y orquesta de Franz Liszt, conocida por su elevada dificultad, Totentanz tiene otras dos versiones, la versión para piano y orquesta y la versión para dos pianos, la versión para orquesta es la que más se interpreta, pues es la más fácil, la orquesta y el piano se van rolando las dinámicas, algo similar sucede con la versión para dos pianos, sin embargo la versión para piano sólo es otro mundo, los 15 minutos son una labor titánica para el pianista. Totentanz es una pieza extremadamente oscura, aunque tiene partes que son tiernas y conmovedoras Liszt en realidad a compuesto ésta monumental obra en base a un principal motivo musical, el cuál suena desde el inicio con el motivo Fa, Mi, Fa, Re, Mi, Re, Do, Re, este motivo de desglosa y se modifica a lo largo de la obra de diferentes maneras.
