Ed Wood’s ‘Glen Or Glenda’ | A David Lynch Fave!
Wood’s iconic b-movie starts with the self-inflicted death of a transvestite named Patrick/Patricia. The investigator on the case seeks information from Dr. Alton who tells the tale of Glen, a man who secretly dresses as a woman and struggles with the decision to tell his fiancée Barbara. Ultimately, Glen spills his secret and the couple is stronger for it. Alton also shares the story of Alan - a WWII vet who underwent sex reassignment surgery to become a ‘lovely’ woman named Anne. Obviously, the film has issues with budget, casting, and storytelling. But it’s important to remember, this was Wood’s first film. While he may have been hindered by lack of resources and experience, he produced a film that people are still watching and discussing today. The influence of Wood’s unconventional filmmaking techniques can be seen/heard in modern films like Eraserhead (which uses the same howling wind sound effect). In fact, Lynch listed ‘Glen or Glenda’ as one of his favorite films. We should also remember, this film is semi-autobiographical as Wood was a crossdresser himself. He made the film to express his personal truth and change the world - not an easy thing to do during the McCarthy era. Directed & Written by: Edward D. Wood Jr. Starring: Edward D.
