Mr. Lakmal Samarawickrama lives near Matara. He initially worked in the private sector but later left that job to invest in a 2,500-square-foot protected house (polytunnel). At first, in this semi-automated protected house, he successfully cultivated Muriya malumiris ( chili peppers ). Following that success, Mr. Lakmal began cultivating salad cucumbers—also known as gherkins—as the second crop in his polytunnel. Typically, a salad cucumber cultivation brings in profitable harvests for about two and a half to three months. However, Mr. Lakmal was able to generate income from his cucumber crop for six months. Proper maintenance inside the polytunnel, the balanced use of organic and chemical fertilizers according to modern technology, and several other factors contributed to this extended success. Today marks the day he is removing the cucumber vines—essentially, the end of the cultivation period after six months.
