Drought in Saskatchewan - 2021

Extreme drought across many parts of Saskatchewan. We typically grow 1500 acres of barley for silage, and get on average 8-10 ton/acre. This year we got 2 ton/acre, which forced us to find more acres to feed our dairy herd. We planted more acres to barley and silaged all of the barley acres we would normally combine. This still wasn’t enough, so we bought standing crops (Peas, Barley, Oats) that had been written off by insurance. (They weren't worth leaving to combine) In the end, we covered an extra 3700 acres to get enough feed. One of which was a 620 acre pea field 24 miles from our farm. It took 14 trucks 2 days to get the job done. It was an intense and stressful year but we are thankful that we had some irrigation which helped a lot.
