Organic Chemistry II CHEM-2425 Ch 22 Carbonyl Condensation Reactions Part 1
Chapter 22 Lecture Video Part 1 Section 22.1 The Aldol Reaction: Draw the mechanism for the aldol reaction using the curved-arrow formalism for electrons. Predict the product of an aldol reaction for a given aldehyde or ketone. Also predict when an aldehyde or ketone will not undergo an aldol reaction. Predict the product of an aldol reaction when elimination occurs via the E1cB mechanism. Use retrosynthetic analysis to choose a starting material that will give a desired aldol product. Section 22.2 Crossed Aldol Reactions: Determine when it would be useful to do a crossed aldol reaction. Give the products for a crossed aldol reaction. Section 22.3 Directed Aldol Reactions: Give the synthetic steps for doing a directed aldol reaction. Section 22.4 Intramolecular Aldol Reactions: Give the products of an intramolecular aldol reaction. These are the lectures that I use in my Organic Chemistry II course. The textbook I use is Smith, Janice "Organic Chemistry", McGraw Hill, 6th Ed., 2020, ISBN13: 9781260119107. Some images used in this video come from that textbook.
